Is My Child Eligible for Disability Living Allowance (DLA)?

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a benefit to help with the extra costs of caring for a child under 16 who has a long-term health condition, disability, or additional care needs.

  • They have a physical or mental disability or health condition
  • They need more care, support, or supervision than other children their age
  • Their condition is expected to last for at least 3 months, and they’ve already needed help for at least 3 months

How Much You’ll Get :

DLA Amounts

The amount of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) you can claim for your child depends on how much help they need with daily care and/or getting around. These are known as the “care component” and the “mobility component”. The level awarded is based on how much support your child needs compared to other children of the same age.
  • The care component is paid at one of three weekly rates: £28.70 (lower), £72.65 (middle), or £108.55 (higher), depending on how much care your child needs.
  • The mobility component is paid at either £28.70 or £75.75 per week, based on your child’s needs getting around.
  • DLA is completely tax-free, and your household income or savings will not affect how much you receive.

We explain how your child’s condition affects their daily care and mobility needs — so you don’t have to struggle with the wording yourself. When assessing a DLA claim, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) looks at how often your child needs help, how much support they require compared to other children their age, and whether they need supervision, gUidance, or special equipment. We make sure all of this is clearly presented in your claim, so their needs are properly understood — without you having to manage the complexity alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can apply for DLA for a child?

You can apply if you’re the parent or guardian of a child under 16 who has a physical or mental health condition that means they need significantly more care, support, or supervision than other children of the same age.

DLA is not awarded based on a specific diagnosis — it’s based on how the condition affects your child’s daily care or mobility. This includes conditions like autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, sensory processing issues, epilepsy, and physical impairments.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) looks at the level of care your child needs during the day or night, and whether they have difficulty getting around. They compare this to what is typical for a child of the same age without a disability.

We complete the full DLA form for you, using expert insight to describe your child’s needs clearly and in a way decision-makers understand. You’ll also receive 1:1 guidance throughout to make the process easier and less stressful.
